Co-Morbidity of HIV and Malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa
نویسنده
چکیده
HIV and Malaria remain two of the greatest risks of global health, accounting for massive morbidity and mortality rates. These diseases are of greatest prevalence in low-income and tropical areas, and overlap most significantly in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is a review of the interactions between these infections, and their treatments.

A Mathematical Model of HIV and Malaria Co-Infection in Sub-Saharan Africa
Malaria and HIV are two of the most deadly diseases in Africa. Combined they account for 4 million deaths each year, and according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is an estimated 5 percent increase in malaria deaths due to HIV infection in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since the co-infections was recorded, malaria has seen a 28 percent increase in its prevalence. Malaria ass...
متن کاملNo Evidence of Association between HIV-1 and Malaria in Populations with Low HIV-1 Prevalence
BACKGROUND The geographic overlap between HIV-1 and malaria has generated much interest in their potential interactions. A variety of studies have evidenced a complex HIV-malaria interaction within individuals and populations that may have dramatic effects, but the causes and implications of this co-infection at the population level are still unclear. In a previous publication, we showed that t...
متن کاملReview of human immunodeficiency virus type 1-related opportunistic infections in sub-Saharan Africa.
Understanding the natural history of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and opportunistic infections in sub-Saharan Africa is necessary to optimize strategies for the prophylaxis and treatment of opportunistic infections and to understand the likely impact of antiretroviral therapy. We undertook a systematic review of the literature on HIV-1 infection in sub-Saharan Africa to assess da...
متن کاملEffect of variable transmission rate on the dynamics of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa
BACKGROUND The cause of the high HIV prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa is incompletely understood, with heterosexual penile-vaginal transmission proposed as the main mechanism. Heterosexual HIV transmission has been estimated to have a very low probability; but effects of cofactors that vary in space and time may substantially alter this pattern. METHODS To test the effect of individual variat...
متن کاملChronic hepatitis B infection in sub-Saharan Africa: a grave challenge and a great hope.
In sub-Saharan Africa, chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a profoundly important public health issue characterised by high prevalence, frequent co-infection with HIV, and suboptimally applied ascertainment and management strategies. Prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the general population varies geographically, with the highest rates (.8%) measured in West ...
